Neil Island, or Shaheed Dweep, is an island of Ritchie’s Archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It is situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal and is about 37 km away from Port Blair.
To reach here, Neil Island ferry is quite popular which leaves from Port Blair every day. While traveling by ferry, you also get to see the peaceful views of the sea.
What we earlier used to call Neil Island, is now named Shaheed Dweep. On 30 December 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi changed the name of this island to Shaheed Dweep – in honour of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of India.
Neil Island was a strategic place even during the British colonial period, but it has developed from the tourism point of view only in the last few years.
The total area of Neil Island is approx 13.7 square kilometers – meaning the island is small and can be easily explored by cycle or scooty. There are only 3 main villages on the entire island – Sitapur, Laxmanpur and Bharatpur. Every beach and tourist point is nearby.
